]]> Mon, 21 May 2012 00:00:00 -0400 http://www.methuentv.org/currentschedule.php?date=2012-05-21 MCTV Remembers MIKE BESHARA http://www.methuentv.org/newsstory.php?NewsID=150 Mike Beshara, a former MCTV Board member and the first guest on "Call to Serve" has passed away at the age of 87. He was a real believer in Public Access TV as he was part of the group who pushed the city of Methuen to create MCTV in 1996. 


 

In 2003, when the "Call to Serve" crew began their training, Mike was there, and he volunteered to tell his US Navy story for the class practice. As everyone who was there can tell you, Mike's story was so enthralling and the production was so solid that it couldn't be put on a shelf. It also couldn't be recreated because something special happened in that moment so it became the first episode of "Call to Serve". Eight years later, the series won a national award from the Alliance for Community Media. That award and the success of MCTV are a part of Mike Beshara's legacy.

 

In honor of Mike Beshara, we are re-airing that first episode of "CALL TO SERVE" on Friday, May 11 at 5 pm and Wednesday, May 16 & Thursday, May 17 at 7 pm.

The Relay will be at the Methuen High School track from June 2-3. 





If you have anything you'd like to donate, feel free to drop it by the studio by May 3. Also, if you'd like to rent an area to sell your own items, we are charging $25. You would then keep whatever money your stuff sells for. 




Please stop by and support the Skelly's Striders. We have terrific Yard Sale stuff and some baked goods as well.

This facility is the heart and soul of all the studio productions done by the staff and members of MCTV. 


"The last control room major upgrade was in February 2003," said Executive Director Karen Hayden. "We've been budgeting our funds and were able to make this upgrade to a Broadcast Pix system."


The control room is now High Definition (HD) ready. Training for members has begun and will continue into the spring. Check out: Facebook.com/methuentv for photos of the control room in action.

In this class, we cover all aspects of studio production from sets, lights, camera operations, audio, graphics to video switching. Volunteers run all of this equipment during most MCTV productions seen on Comcast 22 and Verizon 33.

Tom Gradzewicz, Producer of "The Strike Heard 'Round the World: Bread & Roses 1912" was honored by the Methuen City Council on Monday, February 6. He received a proclamation, sponsored by Jamie Atkinson and Jeanne Pappalardo, outlining the significance of his achievements. Tom thanked the documentary host, Michelle Houle and his camera operators, Leo Roy and Fran Gradzewicz, who assisted with this production. 

 

Mayor Stephen Zanni added his own Mayoral Citation to honor the video, talking about how his family was affected by blacklisting after the Bread & Roses Strike. Check out our new Methuen Now!, starting Wednesday, February 8 or visit the City's website to see a replay of the meeting.

He talked about the predjuice he had to deal with as many believed that black men couldn't fly in combat. They not only flew in combat, they were successful at protecting the bombers flown by white pilots, earning their respect and admiration.


It wasn't until 2007 that the Tuskegee were honored by Congress for their contributions. In honor of the release of the movie "Red Tails", Methuen Community Television is re-airing "Call to Serve: Tuskegee Airman Luther McIlwain" on Wednesday, February 1 AT 7:30 pm and Thursday, February 2 at 10:30 am.
